       To all those that suggested my power supply could be 
   causing the random characters after two hours of use, you
   were right.  I tried a supply from a 130XE with my 800XL
   and after 21 hours of continuous running the screen is in
   fine condition.  Not even  a hint of trouble.  Now the 
   problem is after 7 hours of my supply in the 130XE the only
   sign of trouble is the screen suddenly changes color while
   in use.  If I hit the space bar twice the screen returns to
   a normal using state.  So far no random characters in the 
   130XE.  Thru mail order I can buy a new supply for $25.
