(II) Who shouldn't use the BITNET archives? -------------------------------------- Anyone with FTP access to the Internet archives. This is to reduce the load on the BITNET server. Besides, the path from the server to the main gateways is rather long and seems to be rather failure-prone. (III) How to get a list of available files: ------------------------------------- To get a list of available files, send the command INDEX ATARI8-F to LISTSERV@TCSVM.BITNET . BITNET users can send this via interactive message; anyone can send it as the first line in the body of a mail message. The server will send you the list of files. Please be patient, and don't send multiple requests if it seems to be taking too long. You will get confirmation of your request before the list is sent. There are, at present, many more files on the list than are actually on the server. You can tell if a file exists by the last column of information before the file description. If the column contains a date and time, the file exists. If it contains a row of periods (........ ........), the file has not yet been stored. (IV) How to obtain files: -------------------- Use the command GET to get files from the server. If you want, for example, a file called K65EXEC UUE, the command to send would be GET K65EXEC UUE . Remember that there are no periods between the filename and filetype. Again, you can send the command by mail, or (if you're on BITNET) by interactive message. (V) Miscellaneous information: -------------------------- (i) You should read the header of the file index. It contains more information than I've included here. (ii) I will probably not be able to continue as the BITNET archive maintainer. I don't know at present whether John Dunning is going to take over, or if he'll want to find someone else. Until we hear further, contact him if you wish to volunteer. (iii) If you have any questions, contact me at this address, though I won't be checking mail daily any more. This address may disappear.
