Thank you to all who have helped me run down my hard disk trouble so far.
I now know definitely that my hard drive is at fault (controller and cables ok)
and have but one last question:  Is the drive itself likely to be fixable?  
The diagnostics reported "forward seek error--bad command received by 
controller", and "random seek error".  I'm trying to decide whether to look 
into having it fixed or to take my first look at the guts of a dead hard drive.
