In the Dec 26, 1998/Jan 2, 1989 issue of PC WEEK mag Jim Seymour's column, "The Corporate Micro" (page 69), discusses a pricey gadget from Rainier Technologies in Redmond, Wash. ($395) that he claims solves the problem. He calls it a voice-data switch and you can hear a demo by calling Rainier Technologies at: (206) 881-5304. I'm not sure from his description how the thing works, but it sounds interesting. No warranties expressed or implied, and no connection to Rainier.
