I'm guessing that you mean a _machine_ crash, and not a disk drive crash, but if not, ignore what follows: Do you and your friend have an equivalent number of files? If your friend has a far smaller number of files, the system has to do less work after a crash (when verifying the integrity of an improperly unmounted drive). Ditto if you have significantly larger files, or if your friend regularly compresses his disk, and you don't. 30-40 secs is a fairly long time; I hope some of these suggestions help.
