We prefer that because it is more flexible; i.e., we can attach a different modem or different serial device in the future. It works just fine as shared modem for calling out. Good product. For calling in, it works functionally as advertised; i.e., you can simply print to the laserprinter, etc. However, be aware that, with a 2400b modem, the speed to the printer is 100x slower than you're used to on a direct appletalk (240Kb) link. That is, it is SLOW!
