A "man something" leads to output which can be barely read as everything whizzes by in a jiffy. I used the eeprom command to set rows=20 and that behaviour stopped. What puzzles me is that other suns which did not exhibit this behaviour had rows set to 0 !!!! [[ Perhaps the terminal driver's rows setting was something large.
