If you're running Sun OS 4.0 you can use almost any disk with an embedded SCSI controller. We're running Sun OS 3.2, which is not as clever... has to be tricked into thinking that it's talking to an Emulex MD21 controller when you hook up an embedded SCSI controller disk drive, and then you have to have your supplier format it just right. Most recommend just adding another shoe box, around $3000-$3500 for the Sun original, and down to around $1250-$1500 if you buy either a refurbished Sun box or an independently assembled unit. There are some ads for such in the Sun Times (now the Sun Observer) newspaper, and we are persuing some others. Let's keep in touch on this. We tried a Jasmine Direct Drive 70, couldn't get it to work right, though if we'd had Sun OS 4. I think it would have. We now have on order a unit which is a third party cheap copy of a Sun Shoebox... with the 4000AS Adaptec controller and a Micropolis 1225 86Meg drive... let's see if they actually deliver, and for how much... supposedly in a "few" days.
