Yes, the tapes are incompatible, but there is a simple patch you apply
with adb to st.o that fixes it.  We read 3.5 dump tapes with no trouble
routinely here (our users keep deleteing files they "desperately" need
:-< ).

I can send the patch, or, it may be useful to note that the patch is
present in the st.o that comes off the 4.0.1 Sun OS patch tape.  If there
is enough interest (> 1 request) I will post the patch to sun-spots.
