Lines: 7 I use AmS-TeX all the time. It is intended for typing mathematics papers. The main advantage, I think, is that there are many more special symbols available; the kind of things that only mathematicians could love. But this means that you need special fonts, which not everyone has. They are available from the AMS in many popular sizes. But not (yet) in all sizes, since they are in OLD MetaFont, rather than new MetaFont.
