Be very sure that the /etc/hosts and the /etc/NETADDRS files have the SAME host numbers. Also check your /etc/inittab file for cases where you have 'wait' where it ought to be 'respawn' as this is a sure way to get confused. If your Apple ether card's little red lite is out, so is the card. To my knowalge there is no way to have Apple fix it if so. Look to see if you have core files in /, you will see cores for biod (strings /core | head) if you have not added NFS to your kernal.
