You have to turn of all diagnostic messages and echo that the modem normally sends to your serial port (and which is useful when you try to dial our). What you probably are getting now is that getty say "login:", the modem replies with "COMMAND ERROR" or something like that, the getty then spawns a login, which says "Password:", but "COMMAND ERROR" is not the password for the (non-existing) user, and so login says "login:" again, and this goes on for ever...
