Better merge facilities?

I'm looking for a way to merge text files that is better than the existing
"merge" script that exists with the RCS commands.  What I may be looking
for is a program that compares the differences between files and prepares
a "script" on how to merge them into one file.  If anyone has any pointers
to literature or existing programs on UN*X, please drop me a line, either
here or at runyan@hpda  ( hplabs!hpda!runyan or ucbvax!hpda!runyan should
work also ).
