     We need an easy way to determine whether a process is running,
given its id.  We also would like to be able to determine what process
has a file open, given its name.  These solutions would preferably be 
C code, but script commands will do if that is all that is possible.
     My boss thinks scanning the output of 'ps' is too complex.
     Please reply directly to me, since I rarely have time to read
email lists.
