It should still be treated as a normal event. What happens with Xsun (R2 and R3) is that even when a client can be found for the ButtonRelease (i.e. the release occurred when the pointer was in a window which selected for ButtonRelease), no ButtonRelease event is ever sent. I don't think so. It works just fine for me. Are you sure you aren't running a window manager that's selection for button events on the root window?
