Actually, so far only one person, woodstock@hobbes.intel.com, has understood that my complaint was about the user-level behavior, and was not based on a mis-understanding about what mini-buffers are. So, I now make the following suggestion: The Emacs manual says If the minibuffer is active but you have switched to a different window, recursive use of the minibuffer is allowed---if you know enough to try to do this, you probably will not get confused. If you set the variable `enable-recursive-minibuffers' to be non-`nil', recursive use of the minibuffer is always allowed. I propose that the ^X-O feature be included in the set of commands that is inhibited if enable-recursive-minibuffers is nil. Contrary to what the manual says, I did not "try" this commmand, it merely happened to me. And I got confused. Leigh.
