This bug did not exist in the microport version of the driver, only the 386/ix version. A number of people wrote me and suggested that this could be the problem, Thanks. I contacted the manufacturer of the board with a discription of the bug. They found the problem right away and are sending me a new version. Thanks to those who offered ideas.
