Subject: Getting more info from load or byte-compile

I am trying to put together a working version of gnus and I
keep getting the message

Invalid read syntax: ". in wrong context"

and I can't figure out what's going wrong, nor can I figure out
what routine is causing the error (let alone the line number).  
Is there some type of verbose or debug mode that I can turn on?
