There was a very good article by David R. Spencer in the February 8, 1988 issue of "The Seybold Report on Desktop Publishing" Vol. 2, No. 6 ISSN: 0889-9762. The title of the article was "BEYOND RESOLUTION Other Output Quality Factors." dpi is only one of the many factors affecting quality. For example, mechanical noise of the marking engine itself can ruin a high resolution output.
