Back to first principles: If there is a strong constituency and multiple implementations, a standard should be developed. When we first came out with our upgrade to FTP, to allow transfer of arbitrary VMS files, there were no other implementations to talk to and we STILL had customers demanding that we create/conform to a standard. Certainly, it is reasonable to try to bury the VMS-ness into a clean framework, preferably permitting addition of other operating systems.
