Pre and post-processing options? (tar; compress/uncompress; tar for example) . . . with FTP. or, else realize that it is an os specific problem, and interoperablity is not the goal. Maybe "we" want a 'vcp' for VMS copy, etc. The vendor and it's third parties could come up with the standard for that.
