This is a THEORY, apologies if it's wrong.

I think the problem lies in outputting as text instead of graphics.
The bitmapped font used on screen takes up a certain amount of vertical
space, which when converted to text output, rounds to *2* lines, and
not 1.  The only solution is to edit with a smaller text font.
