There is no need to use HAM mode for greyscale images. The Amiga display hardware can only generate 16 shades (4 bits) of grey, which can be displayed simultaneously in any resolution without using HAM. Better for you would be a program that converts 8 bit greyscale to 4 bit greyscale, and saves the results in IFF.
