A german company called X/software has implemented X Window 11 Version 2
on the Atari ST. They did a presentation here at our computer center
some weeks ago. The Atari was connected via serial line 19200 baud to
a Microvax with Ultrix. X Windows was running on an Apollo connected
via tcp/ip and ethernet to the Microvax. X Window client programs running
on the Apollo had their output windows on the Atari. The output was
slow due to the serial line connection.
In the meantime another company is offering an Ethernet board for the
Atari. Next week we will have a test installation of the ethernet board
together with the X Window 11 version 2 here. I hope that the i/o rate
via ethernet will be much better.
