On the top of the floppy drives of the PS/2's, there are several jumpers.  One
of these, when switched to another setting, forces the drive to make the HD
media check.  It then WILL NOT format the DS/DD disks. I'm sorry, I can't remember exactly which jumper it is though... It's been quite a while since I 
experimented with it.
