i asked this question a while back and never followed up on the few
answers i got.  maybe the technology has advanced.  is there a
terminal emulator program which will generate meta characters (i.e.
with the leftmost bit turned on) when the alt key is pressed?  this
would sure make my emacsing from home a lot more bearable.
