What went out was the flyback transformer. I once saw a photo of a guy standing next to a huge pile of them, all of which he had removed from sick Macs at his company. You can get them electronics suppliers; MCM Electronics is one company that carries them. If I had my catalog, I could tell you the price (and make sure I have the name right) but it is just a few bucks. Heck, just touching up the solder joints fixed the thing so it worked for a while.
