It has the play command when viewing snd's but it just loads them and doesn't play them when I choose it. I did a little poking around with TMON and found that ResEdit is doing a _SysEnvirons to find out something about the hardware before doing the _SndPlay. For some reason it doesn't like my hardware - Mac2Me+DoveSCSI running System 6.0.2 (which supports _SndPlay!). When I hacked the branch after the _SysEnvirons to ignore the comparison result the sound played with no problems that I could see. What is going on here? One more thing ..
