I don't use vi, but it sounds like you have a tab problem. I had a similar problem with some games like rogue or hack when playing them through RR 10.3. It turned out that the problem was tabs. If you don't have the tabs set correctly (I think it is something like 9,17,25,33, etc) then the screen gets all messed up. Try fixing your tabs.
