Since upgrading to 3.4, I have been unable to write 1/4" tapes. Apparently this is a known problem with 3.4 on some machines, so I strongly suspect that nothing is wrong with my tape drive. Now, I have the 3.5 tapes, but I'm disinclined to go through the whole dump/reload/restore cycle just for this one problem, especially if a fix is not certain. So, the question: is it possible to take a piece of the 3.5 system and use it to build a 3.4 system that will work? The new st.o perhaps? Or will this cause more trouble than it fixes? Alternatively, is there some easy way to establish whether I have the flavor of st that 3.4 won't drive?
