I have had thirty-six responses by email and postings re my question.
Thanx to all those who responded and apologies to all who had to
decrypt my message. I should have realized that the system/version would
be almost-all-important. :)

I finally coaxed the system to accept >MY< termcap and terminfo stuff using
your recommendations and am on the way to getting this terminal mess
 straightened out.
