Michigan is actually in the Eastern time zone.

You can reach the Merit computer network dial-ins from Detroit.
Merit is a state-wide network for Michigan universities.  Might
be a reasonable place to contact for email and some netnews 
connections, esp. if you have ties to Michigan.
