Two real clever folks have a way to use the COMPUTER ITSELF to to the ring-counting trick: >I set up a similar system on a PC using software and a Hayes Modem. >I wait for activity on the phone line with a daemon that waits for the >string "RING" from the modem. This starts a timer. If the next "RING" >is within 10 seconds, restart the timer. The nominal phone ring time >is 6 seconds. If two successive rings are more than 10 seconds and less >that 30 seconds apart, the daemon forces the modem to pick up. If 30 >seconds elapse, go back to sleep and wait for "RING" again. > >Works great, but I do need to leave my machine on all the time. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ > >VM Radiological Sciences Telephone: (916) 752-0184 >School of Veterinary Medicine Internet: vmrad@ucdavis.edu >University of California BITNET: vmrad@ucdavis >Davis, CA 95616 UUCP: {ucbvax,lll-crg,sdcsvax}!ucdavis!vmrad > Another fellow had the same trick implemented on a UNIX system. -------------------------------- I also received some info from a company that makes a somewhat more complicated line sharing switch-over box. It is good for FAXes also. It can switch the line automatically, depending on what it thinks it hears (FAX or Modem tones), or on a particular touch tone if you like. It is pretty complicated, as you might expect for $299 (they say they are back ordered through March). But it says it can be configured for these modes: Mode "Line 1" "Line 2" ----------- ------------------ ------------------ FAX mode Phone & ans. mach. FAX (or?) modem Modem mode Modem ans. mach. There are some other modes, but I can't read some parts of their FAX! They are: LYNX Automation P.O. Box 99068 Seattle, WA 98199 (206) 285-1754 Anyone using one of THESE? Please let me know what you think if so! Thanks! -------------------------------- Also, a couple of folks asked about the MR. MOX. It is an AC Power switch that can turn the PC power ON when an >EXTERNAL< modem detects a carrier. It has an override switch for when you are sitting in front of the PC instead of calling in, and a little software for the AUTOEXEC so you can run different programs for the different cases. You would only use this if you didn't want to leave the PC turned on all the time. It is $99.95 from: Kenmore Computer Technologies 30 Suncrest Drive Rochester, New York 14609 (716) 654-7356 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Jay Bowden, EE/Consultant; see also Bowden Engineering Currently contracted at Loral Instrumentation, San Diego {ucbvax, ittvax!dcdwest, akgua, decvax, ihnp4}!ucsd!loral!jcb
