I think the Un*x types are being somewhat prejudiced in this case by refusing to recognize that there is a need for this type of facility. Just because it doesn't apply to them in this case, they con't want to see it added to the overall FTP protocol. The whole point of this is interoperability. I don't see what is so wrong in adding something like this to the protocol to further that end. Lets face it: Unix is NOT the only OS in the world, nor will it probably ever be. Lets stop quibbling about this and get something moving here. Otherwise, the various vendors are going to just going to have to make something non-standard in their particular implementations to provide this very necessary service and we would not benefit from that.
