      The solution I have found most comfortable s to pick colors that don't
  flicker.  Most low contrast combinations should eliminate flicker. 
  (This way you don't have to remember to wear glasses and you don't have
  to reduce you light output for low res work.)

      Don (Hi-Res) White.
 
      PS. I use 640x400 DPaint quite frequently.
