When you daisy-chain a 5 1/4" drive to a 3 1/2" drive into the Smartport,
you can then use physical slot 6 for something else as long as it is not
identified as a drive.  You can not put another drive controller card in
slot 6 under those conditions.  But e.g. a Mockingboard is o.k., or an
A/D converter card.
