Message-ID: <319@flatline.UUCP> Date: 14 Feb 89 01:54:09 GMT Reply-To: erict@flatline.UUCP (j eric townsend) Organization: one bitchin' 3b1 in Tx.Houston.the-Montrose Lines: 29 Thanks to all the people that emailed me with suggestions on how to get compressed files from an ftp site to my 3b1. The process that seems to work best for me: Within ftp, do a "set type i". This puts the ftp stuff into image mode, and handles 8bit data just fine. Keep a close eye on it, though, because many commands revert you back to ascii mode. From the vax to the 3b1. Use kermit. From local, do "set file type binary". This kicks kermit into an 8bit mode that will handle compressed files just fine. Other suggestions: Gil Klopfer (sic :-) and Lenny Tropiano (I think) both suggested that I get it onto a MS-DOS floppy at the Vax site (if all else failed). Luckily, I didn't have to resort to this. I doubt the UofH site administrators would want to bother with a few xfers like this every day or so. :-) Again, thanks for all the help. -- J.
