The latest system looks to see if you have a Mac ][ or whatever and if you don't have an appropriate machine it just uses the old beep. This is because most people seem to think the new beep is dreadful on a Mac +, I agree. Anyway if you have Resedit, you'll need it, open the system and the 'snd' resource. Select 'Simple Beep' and get info, change the id number to something unique. Save the changes as you quit and then reselect simple beep from the sound cdev in the control panel.
