Message-ID: Date: 3 Feb 89 05:26:50 GMT Organization: Rutgers Univ., New Brunswick, N.J. Lines: 69 hi...I need help real bad from any body out there who have installed an appleshare network. I was given the project after i was successfully installed the TOPS network 2 Years ago flawlessly.( God I love Tops!!) i am setting up an appleshare network for 13 Macs SE and 6 ATT 6300 and 1 IBMPC.(About the 1/5 x number of machines when I was installing TOPS) From what i have experienced so far, i can list a couple problems that i hope some one out there may have answers for it. 1. all 12 macs can access the server (the SE with 4M memory) with no problem. In the Server, I put MacWrite 5.01 that has a SHARED bit checked using DiskTop 3.3.(In ResEdit1.2B, the same bit says CACHED) to make the MacWrite multilaunch.( On TOPS, this is a must to make an application multilauch.) First test,I opened 12 Macwrite at the same time. All run!! Wonderfull !!. Second try, start MW one by one. this is where the problem comes. The message "File is busy or damaged:MacWrite 5.01" showed up after 6 Macwrite. After this, I found my self in a very strange situation, I could no longer execute any application from the server. Not even the program that support Networking like Excel1.5 until one of the Macwrite is back on the finder. After excel is executed, one more mac write can now be launched. @#$@$% ??? (:-( Third test, I replaced the Macwrite, this time with no bit modification. try the same test. the result was the same as above + sometimes it only let me open 4 macwrite.(This would never happen under TOPS) Fourth test, redo all the appleshare installation, I put a macwrite in the server with no bit modification. I launched one macwrite. and after that, i launched another and funny, the same message showed up but this time with only 1 macwrite running. (With TOPS this will surely occured) Fifth test, I checked the SHARED bit using the disktop3.3 and tried opening all 12 macwrite at the same time... It worked. And when I try opening it one by one, again the same error showed up. Sixth test, I used the Doppler Maker that supposedly have the option to make an application multilaunch, the result: the same as before. Maximum 6 MacWrite can be opened and when the busy message showed none of the program located inthe server can be executed. After spending so much time on IT, I begun to think that Tops is much superior that the Appleshare when we speak of getting things RUNNING flawlessly. The question I have in mind, Is it the MacWrite5.01 or the AppleShare that mess things UP ?? and If any one have a solution, I would really appreciate any help you can give. **** Thanks in advanced.!!***** 2. the success rate of the Appleshare card on the ATT was 60%,(2 out of 6 fail) to work properly. and the the installation on the PC was a total failure. According to an apple salesman, the ApplesharePC card doesnot work with PC but the AppleShare PC card manual says it should work. If anyone out there ever installed the card, could you guys let me know ?? (Thanks !!) NB: -I do know thatMacwrite is not a network compatible BUT it works UNDER TOPS. -I do know that Fileserver should be used for File exchange, BUT who in the right mind would spend thousand of $$ to do JUST that. -I tried MacWrite 5.0 but the result is disasterous and not worth mentioning. -Ohya, My network is VIRUS FREE. THank you for your time reading this I hope somebody out there can give some help on this matter. ---- Hanz Makmur Rutgers University
