And, it worked This leads me to believe that sticky autopark may be a common cause of hard disk "failure." Recently my Applecrate-60 (Seagate ST277N) exhibited the same symptoms. Although it's still under warranty I opened it up to check the power supply (which was fine), and as a last resort tried some gentle tapping, which did the trick - apparently freeing the head.
