I had a similar problem with my old Apple modem when I went from my 128K Mac
to a Plus.  It turned out to be simply a problem with the cable.  You need a
cable to connect from new style Mac ports to old style modem ports.  The one
I originally bought, although it fit the ports on each end, must have had
some wires permuted incorrectly so the Mac thought there was no connection.
