The root of the problem is appartenly in the way that I free up the port when I'm done since it is only the second or third (depending on the method I try) attempt to set a larger buffer that wedges the system. If anyone has some code to get/free a port (prefereably in lisp) setting your own buffer size please mail me a copy of the relevant sections.
