Any nameserver uses that port. The resolver tends to use udp on all queries, unless they are truncated, and doesn't open any connections. The problem with ypserv as shipped on the patch tape, is that it waits only 8 seconds for a reply from the named, if it dies, it takes longer than 8 seconds to find out.
