One of the reasons is that we didn't want to be in the business of acting as registrar for all the world's devices. The other is that it's really the wrong kind of information for most purposes (but I'd have a hard time giving you any spec for what the right information is :-). Vendors can embed device information in the vendor string; whether any do, I don't know.
