The ITC, a joint venture of IBM and Carnegie Mellon University, has produced several large pieces of software, including the Andrew File System, Andrew Message System, Andrew Tool Kit, and an ODA Tool Kit. Most of these pieces are freely available, and all of them are in growing use at a widely dispersed number of sites. We have received an increasing number of requests to create a newsgroup for discussion of the Andrew software. Because most people are familiar with Andrew as the Andrew Tool Kit and Message System running under the X11 window manager, many have proposed that the new group be called comp.windows.x.andrew. However, all of Andrew, even the user interface component, is window system independent (the Tool Kit and Message System run on several window systems, of which X11 is just one). Moreover, it is inappropriate to confine discussion of something like the Andrew File System to a subgroup of comp.windows.x. Therefore we propose that the new group be called simply comp.andrew. In order to create this group, we need for the various Andrew user communities to speak up by voting in favor of its creation. Please send all yes votes to nsb+yes@andrew.cmu.edu. Please send all no votes to nsb+no@andrew.cmu.edu. Incidentally, I will be using something called FLAMES (the Filtering Language for the Andrew MEssage System) to correlate and tabulate these votes nearly automatically. If you're curious how this works, you should vote YES and then ask for more information once the newsgroup is created. :-) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Nathaniel Borenstein Manager, Andrew Applications Group Information Technology Center Carnegie-Mellon University Pittsburgh, PA 15213 [An Andrew ToolKit view (a raster image) was included here, but could not be displayed.]
