I was able to install gnus3.10 on a sun 4 and read articles from a
remote server.  Unfortunately, every time I exit with q, and
subsequently fire up gnus once again, the article numbers in the List
of Newsgroups buffer do not get updated.  This is especially strange
since .newsrc and .newsrc.el do get updated.  Any ideas?

(The server works fine with gnews and rn.)
