Fortunately for Richard Stallman, AT&T, and others like them, software posted to the net does NOT automatically become public domain. If a copyright notice is attached, there should be no problem. For a good example of this, see the Gnu Emacs distribution. (I mention AT&T because of the mistaken posting of YACC [their proprietary software], some time ago.)
