In regards to your query about prinicpal components analysis, et al, you 
might try looking at:

	_Statistical_Pattern_Recognition_ by Fukanaga

I believe the publisher is Prentice-Hall, but I could be wrong (the book is
at home).  I took a one-week concentrated course in Image Processing and
Pattern Recognition at Purdue and Fukanaga was one of the instructors.  He
knows his subject.
