<Of course.  And on any non-time shared system as well.  The poster to
<whom I was replying considered the passage of time a side effect.  If
<that is the case, you'd bloody well better model it as part of the
<system state.

The definition of sleep involves passage of time, but the definition
of everything else does not. So, even though sleep has a side effect,
if, while, for, etc. do not have the same side effect (though they
may have others).
