We got similar problems with our QMS PS 800II but we have not isolated 
if it is caused by wrong unix set up.  Their manual is written for PC 
and Mac only.  Unix users have to figure out by themselves.  QMS engineers 
are on this net either.  

I got a phone call from one of their engineers after I asked the net for
help.  Apparantly, they got my message thru words of mouth.  I am trying 
to identify the source of the problem before I call them up.
